Interview with Dr Jessica Brooke Kirby about Building Psychosocial Development in Athletic Girls.

Mostafa Sarabzadeh. Section: Sport Psychology WSP

Research has shown that culture plays a crucial role in shaping psychological development, and when it comes to sport, it may be a tool for psychosocial development only if the toxic norms diminished, specifically for the girls. You may wonder what kind of toxic norms we are talking about? If you have ever been a sporty girl participating, or a parent watching their girl,  in mixed-gender school matches, you may be familiar with the derogatory behaviours / remarks overtaken the game atmosphere. These behaviours may vary from being subject to sexism and abuse, and belittling language from players, coaches and also parents of young players. Whatever it is, using this language known as toxic talk, are putting young girls off from an interest in sport, and this reluctance to participate in any kind of sport may never be bounced back. Therefore, these girls will lose one of the biggest opportunities in their life to grow socially and psychologically only because how badly a coach controlled your tongue.

In this episode, I am thrilled to say that one of the internationally recognized dedicated researchers who is based in university of Colorado, Springs, USA, with 17 years of experience in speaking, teaching, program development, and research focused on social psychology, has joined us to talk about building positive and nurturing sport environment to develop well-being and psychosocial factors in athletic girls. Here is Dr Jessica Brooke Kirby with us.
