Mobina Nematzadeh, an Iranian junior taekwondo champion in her first Olympics at the age of 19, secured the second bronze medal for Iran in women's -49kg of the 2024 Paris Olympics, which was the second olympic medal ever won by the Iranian women.
Mobina's journey to elite sport was quite impressive. She started taekwondo at 6 through her father’s support who was a former national body builder, and joined Iran’s national team very soon when aged only 10.
5-times junior and 7-times senior Asian championship medalist, defeated first Michelle Tau, a two-time African bronze medalist, with the scores of 3-0 and 2-0 for two rounds.
Next, in the quarterfinals, she stole the show through an impressive performance against the 2020 Tokyo Olympics silver medalist--- Adriana Cerezo Iglesias, beating her by winning both rounds (2-0 and 7-1) to secure her place in the semi-finals.
After narrowly losing to China's Guo Qing with scores of 4-1 and 6-3 in the semi-finals, although Mobina missed the chance to compete for a gold, but her astonishing performance in bronze medal match A over Saudi Arabian taekwondo competitor---Dunya Abutaleb--- ended up with a 2-0 win, was enough to make her place in the history of Iranian sports as the second Iranian woman has taken an olympic medal home.Â
